THE RIGHT TWIG: RADIO 2020
Between October-December2020, we ran 8 two-hour workshops, 2 mentored writing sessions, 2 rehearsals for the public livestream and the livestream broadcast itself. With experienced scriptwriters and mentors Emily DeDakis and Karis Halsall leading the workshops (who were in turn supported at the start by the YPP team from Fighting Words in Dublin), participants had a truly immersive, high-quality and enlightening introduction to playwriting, resulting in their original scripts being presented by professional actors for a livestream in The Playhouse’s theatre space. Our workshop gatherings all took place in the Riverside Theatre’s Virtual Green Room; rehearsals and broadcast of the live recording happened at The Playhouse, which had an extensive existing AV set-up for livestreaming. Although the restrictions on public gatherings meant none of the writers or the general public could be present during the carefully-monitored work environment of The Playhouse, bringing the writer into the rehearsal rooms via Zoom and opening up the live recording session to a wide public audience gave the writers a sense of occasion and accomplishment that only a live performance can give.
